The most common and well-known application areas of SDIC are drinking-water disinfection and commercial or household water treatment. Apart from being an efficient algaecide, bactericide, and disinfectant for swimming pools, and extremely helpful as a sanitizing agent, water softener, and lime remover in drinking-water applications, SDIC is widely used as a stable source of chlorine in a variety of applications. Commercial applications of SDIC include food, textile, detergents, agrochemical, and pesticide industries.

In the food industry, SDIC acts as a disinfectant and can be applied in food-associated use, mostly to raw vegetables and plants. Some studies show that it helps to “reduce microbial numbers, retard enzymatic activity and improve shelf‐life of sensory quality”; at the same time, SDI gives “an acid pH in solution and has significantly higher activity than sodium hypochlorite”. It is not only useful with the foodstuff, but with the means of food storage or consumption as well: food packaging, paper plates, cutlery, or small appliances are well-protected after proper SDI treatment due to its antibacterial activity. 

SDI is also one of the active ingredients in the bleaching agents for textiles and household dry bleaches applications. As a component of chlorine-containing compounds for contaminated surfaces, equipment and linen it is considered to be safer and more effective than sodium hypochlorite solution and other similar compounds. Due to its sanitizing abilities, SDI is used in various detergents (like soaps, de-greasers, spot removers, etc) as well.
