  • Curing Oven or Heat Press – Used to melt the adhesive powder and later transfer the print to fabric.

Step-by-Step Process of DTF Printing

1. Artwork Preparation

Before any printing occurs, the artwork is prepared using graphic design software such as Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator. The image must be mirrored and adjusted to fit the size of the PET film. RIP software like Acrorip or CADlink is then used to manage white ink layering and produce a clean print output.

2. Printing the Design onto PET Film

Once the design is ready, the DTF printer begins printing the color layer (CMYK) first, directly onto the PET film. Immediately after that, the white ink layer is printed on top of the color layer. This double-layer approach ensures color vibrancy and opacity, making the design pop on both light and dark fabrics.

3. Applying Adhesive Powder

The printed film is passed through a powdering station, or powder is applied manually if done in small batches. A fine layer of thermoplastic adhesive powder is sprinkled evenly over the wet ink. Excess powder is carefully shaken off to prevent smudges and ensure a clean transfer.

4. Melting the Adhesive Powder

The film, now coated with adhesive, is heated using a curing oven or a heat press (without pressure) at approximately 160°C (320°F) for around 2–3 minutes. This melts the adhesive, forming a sticky layer ready for bonding.

5. Transferring the Design to Fabric

Once the adhesive is melted and cooled, the film is placed ink-side down onto the target fabric. Using a heat press at 160°C (320°F) for 15–20 seconds, the design is transferred onto the fabric. Pressure, time, and temperature are carefully calibrated to ensure maximum adhesion and image fidelity.

6. Cold or Hot Peel and Final Press

After pressing, the PET film is peeled off—either hot peel or cold peel depending on the film and manufacturer. For a smoother finish and better durability, a second press (post-press) is often done with a protective sheet like Teflon or parchment paper.
