Gabion baskets - Plant Machinery & Construction Equipment Forum

Evening all, pricing a job which will require around 40m run of gabion baskets to retain approx 1.2 high, any advise on how much 2 of us could do in a day and any thing I should be mindful of, need to keep a good face to them but from what I've seen and researched they can be filled to the rear with clean single sized stone which will speed things up, were both pretty handy and I've done a fair bit of sandstone walls, I was thinking around 6m3/day.
Cheers. Probs not far off at that amount even stone in back of basket is a hand fill job to make sure it's locked in tight to keep basket shape. Use good quality baskets I've seen some recently which had a real thick welded mesh face which would keep straight well. A tip for keeping them straight while you fill them cable tie scaffold tubes across front. Used to do loads on rail job,......15 year back hated them, mostly doubles
Drop stone in first basket,'stretch' out with two pry bars n chains, fill up with 360 as faced front 9x6,top up stone reckon 6- 8 baskets day each that was mostly ex farm boys who loved the job Get some terram or other fabric. Put the tensioner wires in middle first and wind them to stop. The bulge, we then faced up the fronts with gaboon stone, put a piece of terram behind and filled rest with cheap hardcore with digger. Our baskets were 1m cubes , half underwater as we were banking a broom. Did 15 on a cold feb day. On the ground out of water could have done twice as many.

autocorrect won this post..... Theres two ways of doing Gabions from my experince.
The right way, packing the stone in and getting decent baskets square.
Or the Cheap way, Facing the Baskets and then plonking crap in them.

I hate the bastarding things and refuse to get involved unless there being done properly. A good man fed with stone will do 6 - 7 baskets a day IMHO, but that is grafting. I just recommend the lego blocks now unless access is restricted.... f**k the baskets. Here’s some I did afew years ago, after 140ton of Stone I forgot how many I did in a day, but some days I was having to hammer the stone apart as it was that frozen together!
Apologies for photos again, must be a bug in the photo upload software!

Thanks for your replies, the gabions will be seen so need to be done to a good standard so concrete blocks would not be a option , can any one recommend any good suppliers?

I used these I'm considering some Lego blocks to throw up a temporary wall about 3m high 18m long. I think you can get 1.8x.6x.6 blocks but where's the best place to get them?

My best advice is wherever is closest to you, transport costs is what makes them expensive in my opinion, as for what they are they are dirt cheap really!

Been checking online and second hand ones might be an option but like you say transport can be the issue. There is a few guys I've got prices from and there is a difference in cost locally. What should I be paying for them?

I've seen that size, from 50 quid upwards .. new ......but as said, the shipping is the killer, as so few on a truck
also with s/hand ... there are many different interlock shapes

Gabion Baskets: Definition, Types, and Selection Guide - qbmetal

Gabion Wall Baskets: Parameters, Manufacturing Process, and Applications

Process: Metal wires are woven through a gabion machine to create hexagonal mesh openings. This makes the mesh structure flexible and able to follow the land contours and vary the water velocities as desired in its application in the control of rivers and water flow.
Gabion Wall Baskets Parameters:
1、Wire Diameter:
• Mesh Wire: 2-4mm.
• Edge Wire: The diameter is usually about 0.5mm to 1mm more than that of the mesh wire.
• Tie Wire: It is usually between 2mm2.5mm in diameter.
2、Steel Wire Tensile Strength:
• The steel wire tensile strength complies with the standard of ISO , which is 350MPa-500MPa.
• The yield strength of the wire is normally in the range of 250MPa-450MPa.
3、Mesh:
• Aperture Some of the common aperture sizes are; 60x80mm, 80x100mm, 100x120mm.
4、Gabion Box Dimensions (L x W x H):
• Some of the popular sizes are: 2x1x1m, 3x1x1m, 4x1x1m and other customized sizes.
5、Wire Twist Type:
• 3-Twist Weave: In every intersection, the metal wires are twisted three times.
• 5-Twist Weave: At each intersection, the metal wires are twisted five times for better strength and stability.

Welded Wire Gabion Baskets: Structure, Benefits, and Applications

The welding process includes welding steel wires in both the vertical and horizontal positions to produce rectangular mesh openings. The mesh panels are joined to each other to create a six-panel rectangular container with a level and even surface. This structure is used in a variety of applications that demand high strength, including retaining walls, gabion wall fence, and landscape designs.
Welded Wire Gabion Baskets Parameters:
• Mesh Wire Diameter: 2mm – 6mm
• Spiral Wire Diameter: 2.4mm – 3.8mm
• Mesh Aperture Sizes: 50x50, 60x60, 50x70, and others
• Gabion Box Dimensions (LxWxH): 0.5×0.5×1m, 1×1×1m, 1×1×2m and other custom sizes
• Connection Methods: The panels are connected by spiral binding wire, C-rings or U-clips to give it a strong and stable construction.
